The avenue
of AMETHYST project investigations is the assessment and monitoring of
spatial changes of coastlines and environmental trends in the Western
Russian Arctic (WeRA).
Implementation of modern developments in satellite remote sensing, digital
image processing and GIS technologies for shoreline mapping and revising
coastal hydrographic details in the extreme conditions of the Russian
Arctic is a major AMETHYST approach.
Emphasis is put on regional and local studies on Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya
Zemlya and Franz Josef Land archipelagos of the Barents and Kara seas.
The project is financed by the European Union and consists of 6 international
groups located in Germany (Munich), Austria (Graz), Norway (Bergen) and
Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg). Further information about project partners
and the work at IGRAS can be found at the following sub-pages (see links
