State and changes of
coastal area on the archipelagos Franz-Josef-Land, Severnaya Zemlya
and Novaya Zemlya have been mapped and analysed in unified way. Changes
of coastlines and the development of glaciated areas have been determined
for all archipelagos, recorded in tables and reports, and maps.
Total length of ice shores in WeRA in 1952-53 was 3166 km. In the last
50 years 2103 km of these ice shores have exhibited evident changes.
All over the WeRA regions the ice shores reveal the digression trend.
The average retreat rate of ice shores is 30 m/yr on Novaya Zemlya,
-17 m/yr on Franz Josef Land, and 3 m/yr on Severnaya Zemlya.
On the background of general negative trend some small segments of ice
shores have been advanced.
Because of the general ice shore recession in the last 50 years, the
WeRA archipelagos have diminished by 725 km2 in area (-375 km2 on Franz
Josef Land, -284 km2 on Novaya Zemlya and -65 km2 on Severnaya Zemlya.
